Finders Keepers Art at Home with Corner Block Studio: Part One

2020 was a huge year for staying at home and looking at our walls more than ever before. Don’t you think? For some, it’s been a time to reconnect, slow down, and appreciate the spaces we live.

Have you been spending time reimagining your walls filled with colourful and wonderful art?! We sure have! As avid art collectors, we know the joy of connecting with art and artists, but we also know it can be overwhelming. It’s hard to know where to start.

As many of us have been unable to explore art in person, we thought we’d bring the market gallery to you with long-time market friend Natalie from Corner Block Studio. Natalie generously welcomes us *virtually* into her warm home and has taken the mindful time to style & share tips for creating a balanced ‘salon wall’ in your home. Along with insights from six special artists, they share with us what they love about their livelihoods, and how they go about selecting art for their own homes. Follow on for Part 2 where more Artists join us! What to explore more art? Visit Finders Keepers Art & Prints aisle today.

BONUS We wrapped up this feature with a special competition(now closed) as a heartfelt thanks to our community and to celebrate creative cleverness and stimulate some small business support! Jump on our Instagram post here.

Ideas for your at home gallery by Corner Block Studio

I love exploring the artwork inside people’s homes, it’s an intimate glimpse into their dreams, stories and wants. When choosing art, try and put fashion aside, it misses the point. Collect art that speaks to you and about you. The biggest compliment I’ve received about our home is “everything has a story”.

Tips for creating a balanced ‘salon wall’ in your home

1. A consistent colour palette helps to tie the works together. In our salon wall, blues and greens run through every piece.

2. Make the gap between the artworks the same distance. Imagine the space between each piece as a maze and make sure that the path stays the same width, most of the time. This helps to bring order and calm to the salon hang, and stops it from looking messy.

3. Include objects. This is a meaningful way to include your own story and history. My walls display a grass fan from a friend’s wedding and two squash rackets from my Nan. Objects also add yummy texture and depth.

Introducing Artist Georgie Daphne!

Monstera Print by Georgie Daphne

What do you love most about being an artist?

I love getting into that flow state and being completely immersed in a painting. Discovering an idea, putting it down on paper, sometimes it turns out better than imagined, sometimes not. Or sometimes that idea creates another idea which is actually the winner. It’s also a moment of precious time for me amongst the business of mum life!

How do you select art for your home? What qualities do you look out for?

I think colour is always a big quality that I look for. Colour that sparks joy and happiness.

I recently bought an incredible painting by Louise Tate. I was drawn to the way she creates such beautiful harmony with colour. And the details are incredible. I think colour is always a big quality that I look for. Colour that sparks joy and happiness.

Introducing Camila of Eggpicnic

Splendid Fairy-wren by Eggpicnic

What influences your work and what sparks your creativity?

I feel like I never lost my sense of being wondered by everything. As a kid I remember being in constant awe of discovering the world around me (I lived in many different habitats!) and that feeling never went away, I just didn’t grow out of it. I can’t look past the fact we live in an amazing world. I’ll see an unidentifiable insect on my desk and I can look at him for a lifetime and be completely astonished every single time. Life is amazing. And a lot of the work actually comes from a place of fear, of fear of losing these species. The need to show them to the world for people to fall in love and ultimately protect.

How do you select art for your home? What qualities do you look out for?

What matters the most to us is how it makes us feel. And if it makes us feel happy or inspired, it’s a keeper

For us, if we see art that gives us joy or inspires us, then that’s it. It doesn’t matter if it matches the chair or other pieces at home nor do we have to plan a frame colour or the perfect spot. What matters the most to us is how it makes us feel. And if it makes us feel happy or inspired, it’s a keeper. At home we have everything from posters of the work of Latin American masters to oil paintings by art students.

Introducing Annie Davidson

Night Swim by Annie Davidson

What do you love most about being an artist?

I love the variety it gives me in my day to day work. I like creating something new each time I put pen to paper and seeing how the final pieces come together. I also like having a challenge as it stops me from getting bored and it’s satisfying to be able to create what’s in your head/vision.

How do you select art for your home? What qualities do you look out for?

I’m mostly like to choose artwork for the way it makes me feel. If it prompts good memories or just generally makes me feel happy when I look at it.

Whilst you want something that ties in with your colour scheme and the general style of your room/home; I mostly like to choose artwork for the way it makes me feel. If it prompts good memories or just generally makes me feel happy when I look at it. It’s also a bonus if you have friends who create beautiful art as it’s always nice to know where the piece came from/the story behind it. Buying art on your travels is a good way to get these vibes too eg. I have an intricate paper cut artwork from a market in Paris which is lovely.
