Creative Catch Up With DIY Daisy

We’re excited to have self-taught sewist and new author DIY Daisy joining our Sydney AW line-up this July! Starting with a humble blog to document her sewing journey in 2016, me-made champion Daisy Braid creates and shares free sewing project tutorials to inspire makers of all levels. She has just released her first book, Sew It Yourself, choc-full of her easily-adaptable patterns.

Come along and meet the DIY queen herself, snap up one of her limited edition Patchy Wallhangings, and catch the sewing bug! Find Daisy at The Cutaway, Barangaroo from 4pm Friday 29th July until 5pm Sunday 31st July at The Sydney/Eora Market. Tickets are on sale now – Get them here!

What is DIY Daisy and how did it get started?

DIY Daisy started as a blog in 2016, where I shared my sewing journey with other makers in the creative community. It was a hobby, but I always dreamed it would turn into something I could do as my side hustle or even as a job. During lockdown in 2020, I started sharing free sewing project tutorials and began getting opportunities to create content for brands in the creative world which lead to my first product collab with Brisbane woven label company Kylie and The Machine. It was so fun to create a product home sewists could incorporate into their creations. Now I’m a content creator, blogger and author, and I have a little collection of sewing-themed and colourful products for sewists and makers alike.

How has your business evolved over the past year?

In January 2021, I got contacted about writing a DIY sewing book, and of course, I couldn’t say no! 2021 ended up being a huge year of writing, grinding and squeezing every last drop of creative juice out of my body. It was worth it, though, because the final result was my book, Sew It Yourself, which was published by Hardie Grant in June. It’s been the biggest achievement of my life, and I can honestly say I never dreamed this is where I’d end up. I’m happy to share what I love with others and hopefully encourage and inspire them to find a creative outlet that brings them just as much joy.

What can shoppers expect to discover at your stall in Sydney as a new FK stallholder?

I’ll be bringing along my woven labels from my collaboration with Kylie and The Machine, a bunch of my sewing lapel pins, some DIY Rainbow Racquet Kits and hopefully some colourful art prints. I’ve also made some Patchy Wallhangings out of my linen fabric scraps which look so cute and colourful draped up on the wall. They are full of creative energy from my space and all the projects they were offcuts from. A little something from my creative space to yours.

Can you share a few makers you are looking forward to checking out at The Finders Keepers Sydney?

I’m really excited to check out art prints by Little Rowan Redhead, cool candles from Nonnas Grocer, maybe splurge on a recycled fibre picnic rug by Peek Neek and try some Taste Kaleidoscope Tea… I love tea! Market weekends are my favourite because I get to see all the stall holders fill out the space and get inspired by all the creative energy in the room.
