Featured Designer: Daisy and Moose

FK chats to Rebecca of gorgeous vintage inspired kids label, Daisy & Moose!

Tell us a bit about your sweet label Daisy & Moose and what we can expect to discover?
Daisy & Moose is vintage inspired clothing and accessories label for Boys & Girls between 3 Months – 5 Years. All of the pieces are handmade using natural fibered fabrics such as cottons and linens so their suitable for little ones with sensitive skin & not to mention easier to launder because afterall as a Mum myself I know kids get grubby! The range has very much a French feel about it with classic styled pieces in classic styled fabrics. The entire range is designed to be inter-matchable and can be layered for year long wear

What inspired you to start your own label?
When I had my daughter, Madelyn, I struggled to find baby clothes to buy that I simply had a ‘love a first sight’ feeling about and that excited me to get home to try them on her. Afterall, us girls practise playing ‘mummy’ for years dressing up our dollies and when I finally had a little girl of my own I was slightly disappointed that I couldn’t find the perfect outfits for her! So, after year of contemplating starting my own business to allow me the freedom of flexible work hours and enjoy time at home with my baby, I finally bit the bullet. By combining my two passions Design & Textiles and Mummyhood my second baby was born, Daisy & Moose.

What do you love about working with baby & children’s clothing and accessories? and what keeps you creatively motivated?
First and foremost, I love the fact that I get to design and create exactly what I want my Daughter to wear. Designing clothing for Babies and Children allows you to let your creativity run wild a little more, be a little playful and release that inner child that we all have. I love that I’m one of the lucky ones who thoroughly enjoys their ‘work’.
The happiness & pure sense of joy that I get when I let my imagination run free creating a new garment is priceless and motivates me to continue to dream & create, so I can experience that feeling over and over again

What is your workspace like? and what is your creative process?
I like to say my work space is ‘an organised mess’. Everything has a dedicated home in my workspace… most of the time, but only I can ever find what I’m looking for in there however my creativity thrives in this ‘organised mess’.Im a huge observer and I take note of my everyday experiences which one way or another shape my creativity and design process. I make sure I always have a notebook (AKA my little black book) in my bag to jot down any new inspirations or ideas that I’ve gathered throughout the day and to sketch any new designs that i come up with on my daily adventures.
When it comes time to compose a new range I revisit all my past ideas and pick and choose the cream of the crop. With any new range I like to have a new colour theme which I base as my starting point, the colour then defines what garment designs and fabrics I use etc and on it flows…

What challenges have you faced starting your own label, and what are some things you love about it?
Having your own business and keeping up with demand is a lot more time consuming than I ever imagined! Personal and worklife balance is my main challenge and ensuring that my first love, my daughter gets to spend enough time with her Mummy. However, when I see a little one walking down the street in Daisy & Moose I get a feeling of ‘Wow’ I did that! and it makes it all worthwhile. I also love the feedback I get from my customers who continually passionately support and encourage me to keep going, the overwhelming sense of achievement that my customers give me is invaluable!

What can we expect to see from Daisy & Moose at the upcoming Melbourne, Finders Keepers?
I have just finished designing my Spring/Summer 2012 range which will be launched just in time for the Melbourne Finders Keepers. Summer is my favourite time of the year, I love the smell of Summer, the warm breezes and beautiful colours of the flowers out in bloom, so I had a lot of fun incorporating these loves into my new range. There’s some gorgeous new girls pieces in soft lilacs, dusty pinks, crisp corals and dainty florals. And for the boys, faded denims, french linens in reds and light blues and boyish ginghams. I’m also so excited that with our new range we will be launching Daisy & Moose footwear, delightful little sandals in a rainbow of exquisite colours! I can barely contain my excitement!
