Pilar Rojas is a ceramicist and jeweller based in Melbourne. She uses mainly porcelain, which she shapes using hand building methods. Recently she has been, brushing, drawing and scratching black lines using the white surfaces as a background to create a contrast.
She has an affinity with small objects because their size links them to our personal and domestic worlds. In her view the objects we have around us affect us, they can hold a lot of meaning, evoke memories and silently describe us, creating a kind of visual and tactile biography.
Most of all she is interested in creating a poetic language with objects. She connects with the slow movement, its support of things local, its stance on sustainability and most of all, its contribution to contemporary making and the way in which it is reshaping craft practice. She views making as a philosophy, a way of thinking and a way of life.
