We are so delighted that Jess Miles, Designer and Maker of In the Daylight, will be back at our Brisbane SS15 Market on the 7th and 8th November. Read on to discover some interesting tidbits about this inspiring go-getter.
Tell us a little about yourself and how you came to begin your label.
I moved to sunny Brisbane for a work opportunity that didn’t pan out and ended up working in an amazing co-working space in Fortitude Valley. I honestly believe that if I hadn’t have been working there at the time, I probably would have gone back to a job in Graphic Design (which is my background) instead of being encouraged to branch out on my own. So In the Daylight was born! The label came together from a love of illustration and stationery. If I’m honest, I design the range for myself and it is just lucky that other people like the illustrations as well 🙂
What would be one piece of advice you would give a first time seller at The Finders Keepers?
Double the stock you were planning on bringing! The FK markets are an amazing destination and incredibly busy. Also bring lots of business cards to hand out to buyers who aren’t purchasing on the day and for potential wholesalers.
Tell us something exciting that you have planned for In the Daylight this year..
We are planning lots of exciting things for the upcoming year! New designs, a possible collaboration with a big brand in the states and we are moving into some fun 3D timber products as a follow on from our very successful timber print hangers.
Name one resource that your label could not live without.
Amazing paper! I am obsessed with paper and it is a huge part of the aesthetics of my brand as a whole. I had to find the perfect stock and the perfect print quality, which didn’t necessarily go together. My envelope stock was also very important and seemingly therefore very difficult to source 🙂 After a long and arduous journey, I am the only person in Australia with these envelopes as they were custom made for me, but I feel that they bring an amazing addition to the range.
Tell us about your favourite product from your collection.
Tough call! I think it would have to be my range of bookmarks. My favourite comes from a suggestion from my sister-in-law that says “You fell asleep here”. It is hand lettered in ink and seems to resonate with a lot of people. I personally can’t fall asleep in the middle of a book, movie (or conversation – like my husband can) but I know many people that can.
