FK chats to Jana, one half of brother & sister jewellery label JANA & BODIE based in Salamanca, Tasmania! We are excited to have them in our debut section at the upcoming Melbourne Markets!
Tell us a bit about JANA & BODIE and what products we can expect to discover?
JANA & BODIE is a brother and sister, Tasmanian based contemporary jewellery label featuring geometric inspired designs; hand painted sustainable fine Tasmanian timber, bold colour and stainless steel. Our body of work includes pendants, necklaces, brooches earrings and cufflinks. A fluid mix of malty textual design, we pride ourselves on being eco-friendly in every aspect possible.
What are your backgrounds and how did you start working together?
I come predominately from a graphic design background and Bodie from marketing. We grew up in a creative household, which naturally led to our self-titled collaboration. Bodie provides structure to our label whilst I provide all aspects of design, and together we have produced a label that conveys our respective personalities and design aesthetic.
What inspires your work? and what keeps you motivated creatively?
Imagery, colour and surrounds are hugely inspirational in any creative environment and mine is no exception. From an early age I became fascinated with architecture and design form. This has translated into the pursuit of my own creative concepts and ideas, and to propel it to a wider audience. Living in Tasmania there are so many naturally beautiful timbers to work with. I love seeing the finished product reflect all of this.
What do you love about living in Sandy Bay, Tasmania?
I love my little spot in the world. I have been blessed to be so close to everything, including our beautiful beaches, the bustle of our small city, but most of all Salamanca which houses such a diverse range of fellow creative’s.
The lovely summer months are such a fantastic time to be a part of this community, with so many festivals and exhibitions taking place, it is such a hive of activity.
What challenges have you faced starting your own label, and what are some things you love about it?
Starting from scratch you are really responsible for every aspect; designer, maker, accountant, customer service and most of all problem solving. The reality of having a good idea and then taking it to market is hard work everyday. It is a learning experience that translates at times into late nights. It truly is a labor of love in every aspect. We were also blessed early on in our business with overwhelming support from Spacebar Gallery. They really put a belief in what we were trying to achieve.
As a designer you never really stop thinking about what you’re working on so when you complete a design, it’s an overwhelming sense of accomplishment. And to then have people appreciate what you’re trying to achieve, it really is the motivational drive.
What can we expect to see from JANA & BODIE at the upcoming Melbourne Markets?
Finders Keepers Melbourne will essentially be the launch of our product in Melbourne. We are excited to be making this journey, bringing with us our new season colours and designs.
Keep an eye on our facebook page as we have a few new designs that will only be available at AW13 Finders Keepers Melbourne.
