FK chat to Lisa Loxley from the Paper Convention Collective about the upcoming Zine Society to take place as apart of the upcoming Sydney Finders Keepers. The Zine Society will be our first very own Zine Fair! We have a massive space at CarriageWorks reserved for this.
Tell us about the upcoming Zine Society and what we can expect to discover?
In a world of novelties, there are so many ways for us to access cheap and disposable facsimiles of actual experiences these days. We are welcoming all to the first society of self-publications at The Finders Keepers December Markets — zines, trinkets and a witty flair of self expression and stories are on offer by both Australian and International ZINE Artists. The all-consuming paper idolizer Lisa Loxley of The Paper Convention will be watching over this society first and we’re excited!
Who can get involved in the Zine Society and what is the process?
Anyone who loves paper and creates their own; self-publication (limited editions), zines, Art zines (are a kind of scaled down art book) posters, periodicals, journals and novelties. We ask those who create any of the above to send us an email zines@paperconvention.com and we’ll send you a submissions form.
Don’t forget submissions close on the 14th November, so get in quick if you want to be part of THE ZINE SOCIETY at The Sydney Finders Keepers.
Why do you think its important to include this as a feature at the upcoming Sydney Markets?
Zines are generally affordable and sometimes really an individual item; there is no standard format to them, there are so many kinds of zines that they’re always different.
There is a growing community of creative’s, designers and artists exploring the world of zines and self-publication — It’s about being supportive to a growing independent arts community.

We are also featuring as part of The Paper Convention table with International zine~flavour, UK publication house “Museums Press”. MUSEUMS PRESS is an independent publishing house based in Glasgow Scotland, founded by Matt and Jess in 2009. They release zines, prints, artists books, printed matter, posters and organise Group/arts projects and events, so their initiatives are similar to that of The Paper Convention. They work with visual artists, and contemporary illustrators from around the world to release publications of their work.
